Chalet l'Adret in Gryon: solar panels integrated into the balustrade for winter output. Photovoltaic engineering by impulse.

Winter photovoltaic integration at altitude

Set on the heights of Gryon in the canton of Vaud, Châlet l’Adret faced a classic challenge of mountain construction: how do you guarantee efficient solar output in winter when the roof is covered in snow? Approached by the project’s architect and owner, impulse carried out an in-depth study to find a high-performing alternative to traditional roof mounting.

Our solution was a bold architectural integration: installing photovoltaic panels as a palisade on the balustrades. Working closely with the local carpenter on the structure, we designed a bespoke system that harmonises the technology with the chalet’s aesthetic. This approach captures the low winter sun, prevents snow build-up and turns a safety element into a green power plant. As photovoltaic engineers, we handled the complete sizing, the management of the tendering process and site supervision.

Winter challenge

Design of a resilient solution for extreme conditions (snow load, frost) to guarantee lasting output.

Vertical solar

Sizing and integration of balustrade-mounted panels to capture the low sun and the albedo effect of the snow.

Alpine aesthetic

Close collaboration with the architect and the carpenter to blend the technology into the wood and character of the chalet.

Technical feasibility

In-depth comparative study “roof vs facade” demonstrating the value of vertical integration at altitude.

Trade coordination

Managing the interfaces between the carpenter and the electrician for millimetre-accurate installation of the palisade modules.

Photovoltaic mandate

Full ownership of the solar package: from yield calculation to supervision of the grid connection.
